Teacher Spotlight: Vanessa Lange!
Have you gotten on the mat (or some gliders) with Vanessa? She kicks butt with a sweet, sweet smile on her face. You don’t even realize it until it’s already happened, especially when she says “bum” in the most adorable way. Whether you’re flowing it out or HIIT’ing it up, class with Vanessa is a MUST!
Let’s get to know Vanessa a little bit more.
Yoga with Vanessa
I practiced yoga intermittently at the gym while I was studying in Australia, but for some reason never really enjoyed it. When I moved back to Singapore, I followed a friend to a studio for a Power Flow class, and the peak pose was a tripod headstand. Having done some gymnastics as a kid I thought I would be able to do it. But no! It felt impossible and something about not being able to do it while so many others in class could, piqued my interest. Yes, I am somewhat competitive.
It became a goal for me to be able to do a headstand, so I started going for classes regularly and began to fall in love with the culture, community and that “yoga high”. While my initial motivation was a physical one, I began to see the benefits it had on me mentally. I was more grounded, able to handle stress better, and it complimented the other sports I was doing perfectly. As Eric Paskel said “Yoga is not about tightening your ass. It’s about getting your head out of it.”
Extended puppy pose or anything with a heart opener! I used to despise backbends and it is still a work in progress for me, but there’s something physically and emotionally liberating about it! I think it has helped me embrace things that come my way and be ok with things not going the way I want it to.

So often we try to take the easy way out and come out of a pose early. I am so guilty of this! It wasn’t til I did my Yoga Teacher Training that I learned to appreciate the benefits of holding a pose and working deep into it. I am all for listening to your body, but more often than not, your body can do it. It is your mind that needs convincing! Don’t worry, I am not going to make anyone hold warrior 2 for 5 minutes 🙂
What don’t we know about you?
I am an absolute klutz! I trip over my own feet, stub my toe in my own home 100 times a day and drop things all the time. So clumsy, that as a kid, if I dropped something at home, my dad would yell “VANESSA!”. Even though I don’t live in the same country as my parents anymore, should anyone (family or stranger) drop something, he will still go “VANESSA!”
I like to think yoga has helped me not trip over my own feet as much.
What’s something funny you’ve said during a yoga class or did during a yoga class as a teacher or student?
Oh geez, this goes back to me being a klutz. I was demonstrating king pigeon pose with a strap and when I put the strap down to go help students out, I stepped on the strap and slipped. Thank goodness I didn’t face plant, but I couldn’t stop laughing at myself! Don’t think the students were impressed but they laughed along anyway!
